Date of completion:

October 2014

Project Value:

$2.6M

E8 Staff involved:

Kevin Acworth

Project Description:

Funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the QUT Q Block New Plant Growth Facilities Laboratory project was comprised of a range of new (up to PC2 certified), upgraded and repurposed laboratory and ancillary spaces within levels 1 and 6 of Q Block at the QUT Gardens Point Campus.

Project Benefit:

The key project benefit realised by these works was the provision of a range of facilities to enable the distinguished Professor James Dale’s team of scientists to research genetically modified bananas. Key to the professor’s research was the development of a food source with greatly increased levels of β-carotene, which the human body converts to vitamin A. The research enabled by this laboratory has the potential to ease the suffering of millions of people in Africa and Asia for whom vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness or death.

Key Services:

Through strict project controls, E8 staff ensured that the time, cost, scope and quality aspects of the design were delivered as documented and in accordance with the contract to ensure that this key research could commence in a timely manner.
